Medical Treatment Visa

VISA FEE: CFA F 60,000 (applicants over 13 years old) / CFA F 30,000 (ages 7–12) / FREE (ages 0–6)

The medical treatment visa allows foreign nationals to enter Italy for a short‑ or long‑term stay, always for a limited period, in order to undergo medical treatment in accredited public or private Italian healthcare facilities. The relevant legal framework is set out in Article 36 of Legislative Decree 286/1998 and Article 44 of Presidential Decree 394/1999, which define the required conditions, criteria, and documentation.

The application may also be submitted by a family member or by another person with a legitimate interest. The visa may likewise be issued to an accompanying person, provided that they have sufficient financial means for the duration of the stay.

The residence permit for medical treatment is valid for the duration of the therapeutic treatment, may be renewed as long as documented clinical needs persist, and allows the holder to carry out work activities.

For simple medical check‑ups, a tourist visa may be issued, provided that the legal conditions and requirements are met. The Embassy of Italy may request a certificate issued by a doctor of its choice confirming that the necessary treatment is not available in the applicant’s country of residence.

What documentation is required?

To obtain the visa, the applicant must submit, in addition to the duly completed and signed application form, a valid travel document and passport photos:

  • A medical certificate describing the pathology, issued by an Italian healthcare facility or by a foreign medical institution deemed suitable by the Embassy, with translation into Italian;
  • A declaration from the selected Italian healthcare facility (public or accredited private) indicating the type of treatment, the start date, the estimated duration of the treatment, and any hospitalization period;
  • A statement from the chosen Italian healthcare facility confirming the payment of a security deposit equal to 30% of the estimated total cost of the required medical services;
  • Documentation proving the availability in Italy of sufficient financial resources to fully cover medical expenses, food and accommodation outside the facility, and the repatriation of the patient and any accompanying person;
  • Round‑trip travel ticket (or booking), also for any accompanying person.
