{"id":2852,"date":"2026-01-11T18:46:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-11T17:46:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ambabidjan.esteri.it\/?page_id=2852"},"modified":"2026-01-12T17:48:21","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T16:48:21","slug":"employment-visa-subordinate-work","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/ambabidjan.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero\/visti\/uniform-schengen-visas-usv-type-c\/employment-visa-subordinate-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Employment Visa (Subordinate Work)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ambabidjan.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Tabella-dei-diritti-percepiti-per-i-visti-gennaio-2026-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VISA FEE<\/a>: CFA F 60,000<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>employment visa<\/strong> allows a foreign national to <strong>carry out in Italy a work activity under an employment relationship<\/strong> with an Italian employer or a foreign employer legally operating in the national territory.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As a general rule, entry for subordinate work is subject to the <strong>annual quotas<\/strong> established by the <a href=\"https:\/\/ambabidjan.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero\/le-visa-pour-litalie\/the-decreto-flussi-foreign-workers-quota-decree\/\"><strong>Decreto Flussi<\/strong><\/a>, adopted by Prime Ministerial Decree (D.P.C.M.), which applicants are strongly encouraged to review carefully.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The issuance of employment visas requires\u2014except in specific cases\u2014the <strong>prior obtainment of the work authorization (nulla osta)<\/strong> issued by the <strong>Single Immigration Desk (Sportello Unico per l\u2019Immigrazione \u2013 SUI)<\/strong>. This authorization is an indispensable prerequisite for the subsequent visa application. The nulla osta is issued after verifying the availability of quota, the employer\u2019s financial capacity, the adequacy of the job offer, and the absence of grounds for refusal concerning the worker. It is <strong>transmitted electronically by the SUI to the competent diplomatic\u2011consular Representation<\/strong> and must be used <strong>within six (6) months<\/strong> from issuance for hires falling under the Decreto Flussi quotas, or <strong>within four (4) months<\/strong> for special cases under Article 27 of Legislative Decree 286\/1998 (entries outside quotas or subject to special procedures). After this period, <strong>the nulla osta expires and must be requested again by the employer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Once the visa has been issued and the worker has entered Italy, they must report to the SUI to sign the <strong>residence contract<\/strong>, which formalizes the employer\u2019s commitment and enables the application for the<strong> residence permit for subordinate work<\/strong> at the competent Questura.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">PLEASE NOTE<\/span>:<\/strong> For employment visas in the <strong>domestic and home\u2011care sector<\/strong> (housekeepers, caregivers, home assistants), the Decreto Flussi introduces a prohibition on hiring workers who are relatives (grandparents, parents, siblings, grandchildren) or in\u2011laws (parents\u2011in\u2011law, sons\/daughters\u2011in\u2011law, brothers\/sisters\u2011in\u2011law) up to the <strong>second degree<\/strong> of the assisted person or the employer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Required Documentation<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To obtain the visa, the applicant must submit, in addition to the duly completed and signed application form, a valid travel document and passport photos:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><strong>Work authorization (<em>nulla osta<\/em>)<\/strong> issued by the competent <strong>SUI<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Curriculum vitae<\/strong>, accompanied by any additional documentation relating to academic and\/or professional qualifications, as well as <strong>reference letters<\/strong> from previous employers;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Updated company registration extract<\/strong> (<em>visura camerale<\/em>) <strong>and financial documents<\/strong> (balance sheets, tax returns, or other evidence of economic solidity and actual business activity such as website, photos of premises, licenses, authorizations); for <strong>domestic employers<\/strong>: documents proving the <strong>household\u2019s financial capacity<\/strong> (e.g., previous year\u2019s income tax return);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Copy of the employment contract<\/strong> or job offer submitted to the SUI, including a detailed description of <strong>duties<\/strong>, working hours, workplace, and <strong>salary level<\/strong>, to verify compliance with national collective labour agreements (CCNL);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Information on the applicant\u2019s family and housing situation in the country of origin<\/strong>, to assess migration risk;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Proof of accommodation in Italy<\/strong>, if not already provided by the employer;<\/li>\n<li><strong>For domestic and home\u2011care sector visas: birth certificates of the applicant (and spouse, if applicable), their parents, and the employer and their parents<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Special Cases<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Healthcare Professions<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Issuance of the visa requires not only the nulla osta but also the <strong>prior recognition of the professional qualification<\/strong> by the Ministry of Health. If the activity to be carried out in a healthcare facility does not involve performing regulated healthcare tasks, the visa application must include a <strong>declaration from the facility\u2019s legal representative<\/strong> confirming that no professional recognition is required.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Foreign Athletes<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The employment visa for <strong>foreign athletes<\/strong> is issued on the basis of a <strong>nominal authorization from CONI<\/strong>, required for both professional and amateur activities. For <strong>minor athletes<\/strong>, in addition to <strong>parental travel authorization<\/strong>, an <strong>authorization from the Territorial Labour Directorate<\/strong> is required to verify compatibility with child\u2011protection rules.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Foreign Journalists (Correspondents)<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Journalists<\/strong> assigned as <strong>official correspondents<\/strong> in Italy do <strong>not<\/strong> require a SUI nulla osta. However, the employment visa may be issued <strong>only after<\/strong> obtaining the <strong>authorization of the Press Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAECI)<\/strong>. The applicant must register in the \u201cJournalists\u2019 Area\u201d of the MAECI website (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/it\/sala_stampa\/areagiornalisti\/accreditamento\/\">https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/it\/sala_stampa\/areagiornalisti\/accreditamento\/<\/a>), complete the online form, and upload a letter from the Editor\u2011in\u2011Chief confirming the appointment, specifying role and duration. A unique identification number is then issued and must be communicated to the diplomatic mission of the journalist\u2019s home country in Italy, which will submit a <strong>Note Verbale requesting accreditation<\/strong>. For further information, you may consult the \u201cPractical Guide for the Foreign Press\u201d, available in the same section of the MAECI website (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/it\/sala_stampa\/areagiornalisti\/guida_per_stampa_estera\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/it\/sala_stampa\/areagiornalisti\/guida_per_stampa_estera\/<\/a>). <strong>Family members<\/strong> may receive a <strong>mission visa<\/strong>, subject to the same authorization and accreditation procedures.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Members of <strong>media crews (TV, Radio, Film, Press)<\/strong> travelling to Italy for short professional stays must apply for a <strong>business visa<\/strong>, provided the legal requirements for that category are met.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Seafarers<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Foreign seafarers<\/strong> assigned to Italian\u2011flagged vessels do <strong>not<\/strong> require a SUI nulla osta and, if classified as \u201cseafarers,\u201d are <strong>exempt<\/strong> <strong>from the employment visa<\/strong> under Article 318 of the Navigation Code. However, <strong>personnel working in complementary services or hospitality<\/strong> on Italian cruise ships <strong>must obtain<\/strong> a <strong>maritime employment visa<\/strong>, issued on the basis of:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Formal request from the shipping company;<\/li>\n<li>Individual employment contract;<\/li>\n<li>Service contract for onboard activities;<\/li>\n<li>Vessel registration certificate in the International Register.<br \/>\nIf the seafarer is only joining or leaving the vessel without performing work in Italy, a <strong>transit visa<\/strong> is sufficient.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Workers Assigned to Vatican Entities<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Foreign nationals called to <strong>work for bodies or departments of the Vatican City State<\/strong> do not fall under Italian employment categories.
