Economic cooperation

Economic cooperation

Relations between Italy and Ivory Coast are excellent.

Italy has participated at the development process of the Ivory Coast through a constant entrepreneurial presence, operating above all in the sectors of wood processing, maritime transport, agribusiness, energy and infrastructure.

Many small and medium-sized entrepreneurs have tried to transfer the model of small and medium-sized Italian companies in the Ivory Coast, especially in the construction sector, food processing, palm oil production and in the textile sector.

There are also several medium-sized entrepreneurs who have been working in the timber and infrastructure sector for many years and in the last few years in tuna canning and in the pharmaceutical sector.

Bilateral trade interchange

In 2015 Italy was the sixteenth customer and the fifth supplier of the Ivory Coast (preceded by Nigeria, France, China, United States). The volume of trade has progressively increased between 2013 and 2015, a year of particular expansion for import-export, and then returned to 2014 levels, reaching a value of 479 million euros in 2016, of which 182 million euros exports to the Ivory Coast (mainly food products, machinery and construction materials) and 297 million euros of imports from the Ivory Coast (mainly agricultural products and timber).

2017 seems to show the same trend of 2016, without significant changes in the overall volume of bilateral trade.

Opportunities for Italian investors

The Ivory Coast presents a business friendly environment, with the European Union as the main Ivorian trading partner; opportunities exist for Italian companies, especially in the energy and agri-food sectors (the country is among the first producers in the world of almost all crops with high industrial impact - cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber and cashew) sectors considered priority from the Ivorian government and at the center of the cooperation interventions promoted also in the EU. The Ivory Coast is an important starting point for penetration in West African countries.

The occasion of Expo Milano 2015 has allowed to realize an economic forum of the Ivory Coast in Milan that has seen numerous contacts between the companies of the two countries.
